When my husband Oliver died, my life ended. My purpose, my passion, my everything bled out with him on the side of the Pacific Coast Highway.

Ollie was an organ donor. His eyes, his brain, his lungs, his heart…parts of my Ollie went out and saved lives.

Then His heart, beating in another man’s chest, found its way back to me, and I found myself faced with an impossible choice: hold on to the pain and beauty of the past and the memory of the man I loved, or reach for a bold new
future, knowing each heartbeat will be a reminder of all I’ve lost.

•••

I wasn’t supposed to live past thirty.

My grandfather died at forty-five. Heart failure.

My father died at thirty-five. Heart failure.

The doctors told me my whole life that I wouldn’t see my thirty-first birthday. My heart was going to give out. It was just a matter of time: a rare blood type and an unusually large heart meant essentially zero chance of a transplant.

I proved them all wrong…by dying on my thirty-first birthday.

And then I woke up, alive, with another man’s heart inside my chest, and his widow on my conscience.

I spent my whole life preparing for death, and now I have to learn how to live. Only, as I soon discovered, living is the easy part.

Loving, and allowing myself to be loved…well, that’s a whole lot harder.

MY REVIEW

Living with a medical condition that puts an expiration date on your life is never easy. For Lachlan – it gives him a reason to party like a rock star. Nothing is too extreme. Rocking climbing, swimming with the sharks, and drinking himself into oblivion are a few of the things Lachlan pushes the limit with. When you add that to the fact that Lachlan has an unlimited amount of money at his disposal, and you know there is nothing that the daredevil won’t add to his list of things to accomplish. As far as Lachlan is concerned, his life DOES have an expiration date. It’s the magic age of 30.

Helping others is a way of life for Niall and her husband Ollie. Both travel the world in dangerous countries helping those that cannot help themselves. Doctors Without Borders is the center of their lives and the focus of their world. Ollie is a doctor and Niall is the nurse right by his side. A partnership that extends from heart ache from the tragedy they view, to the blissful comfort they find in one another’s arms.

Nothing could have prepared Niall for the way she would tragically loose Ollie. Just as he lived his life by helping others, Ollie’s death was another way for the doctor to ’give back’. As an organ donor, Ollie’s various organs went to those who desperately needed transplants. A reminder of the selfless acts that Niall’s beloved husband bestowed upon others. To feel closer to her beloved husband, Niall moves back to his hometown in Oklahoma. Thus her pattern of not really living begins…..working, eating, and sleeping. A former sliver of the life Niall once lived.

Lachlan never imagined waking up ever again. All those years spent knowing that his time on this earth was limited. Imagine the shock of ’coming back’ from the brink of death only to discover that another man’s heart is beating in his chest. A fact that haunts Lachlan about his place in the world. Curiosity over the identity of the donor that saved his life begins to overwhelm Lachlan. With limited information, Lachlan sets out to discover more about the mystery surrounding the heart now beating within his chest. A quest that will lead him in a direction he never expected to take…..

What a wonderful and thought provoking love story. I have to be honest….I had to put off reading Yours when it first released. Usually I am all over a story written by Jasinda Wilder. This time I paused because Yours came out just days after my own husband had a heart attack out of the blue, died for a while, and the doctors told me they didn’t know if he ’would stay with us’. So after reading the blurb and having such raw emotion going on in my life, I knew I couldn’t read a book like this that soon after almost losing my own husband for good.

Yours is definitely is an emotional journey. One of loss, love, and the anguish of letting go of the one you love. A beautiful testament to honoring a love of a lifetime, and moving one when life deals a difficult hand. A must read for any romance reader!!
