I’m over men. I’m done with them.

Or at least the ones that work in my kitchen. Fine, one man in particular. Wyatt Shaw is cocky and condescending and so far out of his element that he doesn’t know which way is up. Or how to run his brand new kitchen all by himself.

That’s where I come in. Sous chef extraordinaire. Second in command. Bane of his existence. I am the reason Wyatt’s doing so well as the new executive chef of one of our city’s most prestigious restaurants. He has me to thank for his glowing accolades and five-star write-ups. Only if you were to ask him, he’d say I’m his biggest problem.

Despite his discouragement and bullish behavior, I’ve set two goals for myself.

The first? I’m going to fight my way to the top of this male-dominated industry and claim my own award-winning kitchen.

The second? I’m going to do whatever it takes to ignore Wyatt and his rare smiles and the thickening tension that’s started to simmer between us.

Wyatt Shaw might be Durham’s new shining star. He might be up for a James Beard Award. He might be my new boss and key to my future success, but he’s also in my way.

So he can keep his smoldering looks and secret kisses. And he can be the one that figures out how to make it through service without getting distracted by me.

I’m not the problem. The problem is him.

“I’m impressed, chef. This is a good idea.”

His eyes sparked with the compliment, but his words surprised me. “You shouldn’t say that.”

That look was back, the one that had gotten me into so much trouble last night. One part confident, sexy man, two parts vulnerable and open.

“Say what?” I whispered.

“But you are a chef.”

His jaw ticked. Anger, I thought immediately. But it wasn’t. It was something else. And now it had me questioning every single time I’d seen it before. “And I like it far too much when you remind me.”

I laughed a breathy, girly sound. I couldn’t help it. Now he was flirting with me? Opening up to me? Sharing his plans for the future with me?

“Wyatt, what are you doing?”

His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down as he struggled to swallow. My eyes tracked every second of it.

“I’m trying not to kiss you, Kaya. I thought that was obvious.”

Now it was my turn to nearly choke on my tongue. “You’re ridiculous.”

“You’re beautiful.”

Working in the food industry is hard for anyone. As a female Sous Chef, making a name for yourself can be even harder in the shadows of an Executive Chef. Kaya had always planned to go to college, get married, and live out her days near the town that she called home. Then she decided to take a cooking class, and the course of her life changed from that moment on.

Chasing your dream of becoming a head chef comes with plenty of sacrifice and hard work. A dream among the many hours that one will devote to perfecting their craft. Kaya has given all she can to following this dream. Working long hours, working her way up the chain, and giving up any resemblance of a personal life is just a part of becoming the lead chef of a prestigious restaurant.

After Killian departed Lilou to expand his own career goals, Wyatt was named the Executive Chef. With Lilou’s reputation on the line, Wyatt steps up to the task with a fire in his eyes. To keep Lilou on the top of the ‘Best Of’ lists, his entire kitchen has to perform at the top of their game. While it is customary for an Executive Chef to lean on his Sous Chef, Kaya feels that Wyatt is ignoring her strengths. The two are like oil and vinegar in the kitchen. Always with a back and forth banter that leaves you wondering if they are friend or foe. Until Wyatt finally lets Kaya in on a secret. All that animosity is present to cover up the attraction that Wyatt feels for Kaya. With her own dreams of becoming a head chef on the line, what will Kaya do?

Ready for a story with the not so typical storyline?? The Problem With Him definitely fits the bill!! Kaya and Wyatt are two hard working individuals. Both have given up any resemblance of a personal life to achieve their dreams. Now – Wyatt is the ‘top dog’ in the restaurant, and Kaya is faced with deciding what she really wants out of life. A combination that is sure to upend this kitchen!!

Kaya is definitely an enigma all on her own. Add to that Wyatt’s intensity and desirability, and you have one steamy combination. Higginson  treats her avid readers to cameos from some of their favorite characters….Killian, Vera, Molly, and Ezra. All combining in a romance that is anything but ordinary!!
