Finding your soul mate is unpredictable and usually comes without warning. August met Iris during a time when he didn’t realize he was missing a part of his soul. Iris was that missing piece. The only problem was Iris ‘belonged’ to someone else. The timing of their time in that bar was ill fated. What neither would realize is just how substantial that one moment in time would become.

August West had always believed in his dream of playing basketball in the big leagues. Little did August know that the one time he met Iris….she would become his personal torment both on and off the court. As the reality of making it to the NCAA draws near, August must face Iris during the quest for the championship each season. As the partner of his rival on the court, Iris is living her own torment. One that deepens with the fame, money, and string of women that haunt the rising stars on the court.

Outside appearances are never what they seem. A fact that August and Iris will learn with each passing moment. Through the fame, sadness, and torment lays an attraction that cannot be ignore. The reality of which will bring this two soul mates to their knees in more ways than one.

First let me say that Long Shot is everything you think lies between the covers merged with so much more depth than you could imagine. It is a story that is riddled with pain and torment, but one that cannot be ignored. One of the things I am starting to love about Kennedy Ryan is her ability to dive into subject matter that few want to tackle. A realistic view of romance that defies the odds.

August is an inspiring character all on his own. One that shows you there truly are honest and kind men in this world. Individuals that want nothing more than to overcome the odds. It was easy to understand how Iris and August would be attracted to one another. Both held that once in a lifetime connection that most only hope of finding through the chaos. It was believable, realistic and full of emotion.

The one thing that kept me from rating this book a full 5 stars was the torment that Iris went through on her journey to love. While it was emotional and gut wrenching, I felt it still lacked a little bit of realism. Many of you will ask how I can say that about such a poignant and engaging novel. The reality is that I have lives with domestic abuse in my lifetime. There is a pain that is hard to put into words. The author portrayed this story from beginning to end with such conviction and honored those that walked in the shoes of Iris. However – it is like hearing a second hand account and trying to relay that into words. There is still an element of the pain and realism that I felt was missing from Iris’ life that wasn’t put into words. That may have been intentional to spare readers some of the pain, some of the reality of the situation. Regardless, it was a fact of those lacking tid bits that caused me to drop my rating just a bit. Does it mean I didn’t feel the words? No. Does it mean this book wasn’t exceptional? That is definitely far from the truth. It just was a few tidbits that were missing during a cycle of abuse that I felt would have put this story over the top.

Long Shot is definitely a book that you should add to your reading list!! Plan on becoming so engrossed in the writing that you will be gutted from the words. Regardless to where you sit on the subject matter, Long Shot will definitely stay with you long after the last page is read. A beautiful story that is full of heartache and happiness, struggles and survival. Most of all it is a journey of perseverance and faith in the human spirit.
