In the year 2080, a deadly retrovirus is inadvertently released upon the planet. Facing financial ruin and catastrophic loss of life, the world’s nations turn to acclaimed neuroscientist Alex Pella and NIH expert Marissa Ambrosia.

Assembling a team of experts, the scientists begin an international search for the cure while fighting off a foreign elite military unit sent to stop them at all costs. Guided by a code concealed within the Hebrew text of the Old Testament, the scientists must traverse ancient lands and solve a biblical riddle in their quest to save humanity from its eminent destruction.

Drawing from both our nation’s politically charged environment and the worldwide economic crisis, The New Reality follows Alex Pella on a journey that projects a frightening path for human existence in the twenty-first century.

I really liked this book.  It may be a little scientific and political for some people, but given my background and interests this book enthralled me.  Dr. Martino takes what is currently happening in the United States and the world to a new level.   Dr. Martino portrays what could very easily happen if political greed out paces sound financial strategy.  Economic Failure, Man Made Disease, Powerful corporations, and the failure of Governments are all fundamental elements of this book.

I like it because Dr. Martino, yes he is a Doctor, see below, looks at what is going on right now and gives a hypothetical examination in the format of a medical thriller.  It is somewhat long at 326 pages, but once you start reading it, you don’t want to stop, even when other things like going to sleep need to occur.  For this to be his first book, I was really surprised.  The only thing that I think could have made it better, and given it that elusive 5 star rating from me is more defining of the characters.  Some of them in my opinion are a little flat.   Something I really like is that the author did his research, it was not just a story, but a real history lesson, as well as cultural lesson of different cultures.   Dr. Martino made sure to describe correct cultural significant garments.  The fear of one super power is on many minds currently, and Dr. Martino takes that fear to a whole new, undiscovered level.  What happens when one company led by an aging and tyrannical leader is owed so much by every country that with a flick of his wrist he can easily take over the country, oust the leaders, and change everything.

The Disease is a relatively new disorder that kills as swiftly as it infects.  There is no cure for it, and there is only one real group that could find this cure, however the United Arab Alliance, an organization of Middle Eastern countries is attempting to foil any cures, well until they can make their own and sell it to the highest bidder, even when their own are falling ill and dying.  It is up to Alex Pella, a scientist, and the owner of one of the largest, and only existing private health care centers in the United States to not only find the answers to cure the Disease but find out what is happening on a more global scale, if he can keep himself alive long enough to do both.
