A bed posed on a stage under a dazzling spotlight. An audience of hungry eyes. And him, the other half of my soul, our supple bodies moving as one . . .
Sundara: the lush and forbidden oasis in the desert where men travel to watch acts of sexual deviancy, and the only existence seventeen-year-old Karys has ever known. But despite a life where secrets and sin are in high supply, and freedom remains far beyond their reach, Karys and her partner Zakai find safety in each other, their passionate love the light that helps them both survive the darkness.
Very suddenly, Karys and Zakai find themselves in the bright and confusing world of New York City, navigating separation, school, and relatives who are all but strangers. If they’ve been found, why do they still feel so lost? As their new lives threaten to drive them apart, and Zakai spins out of her grasp, Karys must figure out who and what can be trusted in this strange city, seemingly filled with more venom than the desert they once called home.

Anytime I see that Mia Sheridan is releasing a new book, I don’t hesitate to dive in headfirst. When Sheridan announced the release of Once We Were Starlight – I didn’t even stop to read the blurb. I went into my reading ‘blind’ and couldn’t have been happier!!
Karys and Zakai live in a gorgeous Oasis that is known simply as Sundara. It is the only place that Karys has known to call ‘home’. Sundara is nothing like a home anyone would imagine. It is a mirage that lures sexual deviants from across the globe. Within the walls of Sundara, everything comes with a price. Karys and Zakai are indebted for a debt that they don’t quite understand. With the compound as a shield to the outside world, Karys and Zakai can only dream of a day when deviancy doesn’t rule their lives.
In a moment that will forever alter their lives, Karys and Zakai find themselves thrust into a world that is beyond anything they could have dreamed. A life that was full of opportunity, confusion, and heartache. While Karys finds herself with a family she doesn’t know, Zakai is struggling with the anger that is brewing from life at Sundara. As this new world offers the chance at redemption, Karys and Zakai struggle with looking towards the future. Two souls that were once melded together are now torn apart.
What an amazing journey lies in wait between the covers of Once We Were Starlight. As always – Mia Sheridan creates a unique storyline that captivates me from chapter to chapter. Zakai and Karys lead a life that can only be described as tumultuous. Their journey kept me glued to the pages and desperate to know where their story would end. It’s hard to describe this novel without spoiling anything for readers. What I can say is this novel has a unique plot that will have you leading the charge to find that glimmer of starlight in Karys and Zakai’s future!!
