Committed to his pack and not one to turn away from a challenge, Dan follows his Alpha’s request and works with Nathan Ross, the new pack Omega. Though he is initially concerned that Nathan’s weakness will harm the pack, Dan learns there is more to the shy wolf than meets the eye.
As Dan struggles to balance his growing feelings for the young wolf with his responsibilities to his pack, new threats emerge and Nathan’s loyalty is questioned. Not understanding the basics of being a wolf leaves Nathan vulnerable and the pack at risk. Can Dan embrace the true role of a beta so he can protect the man he has grown to love and save his pack?

It’s not often that a reviewer asks you what position you would prefer, but if Laura wants to know, I’ll answer it! Okay, so she really wanted to know if I were in a pack, what position would I be, but since the idea of talking positions made me giggle (What can I say? I’m a gutter brain. You don’t mind, do you?), I couldn’t resist starting the post with a little position chat.

Enough of the silliness. What I really did when Laura asked me this question was stop and think. What position would I hold in a pack? Would I be the Alpha? The Beta? The Omega? I think it depends on your definition of the roles. They seem to be a little different in every paranormal book I’ve read, but there are a few tried and true roles.

This weekend, I was at a conference in the United Kingdom, and I had an opportunity to sit and chat with another paranormal author I admire about the role of an alpha in a pack. We all know the typical alpha trope in a paranormal book. Big tough Alpha Man scoops you up and growls and really just makes your heart race (and your panties melt… *ahem*). But is that really a role of an alpha?

What if an alpha’s job is more like a mother? The caregiver. The manager. The boss. We talk about “Mama Bears” and everyone knows you better not mess with her cubs. What if an alpha werewolf is like that? If so, I’m definitely an alpha. Everyone teases me for mothering them at conferences. They can tease away, I won’t stop doing it.  It’s my nature. And if you mess with one of my pack, I get furious. Pick on me all you want. I shrug it off. Pick on them and I get very growly and scowly and cranky.

That’s the kind of alpha Lex becomes in the Pack Partners series. He’s gruff and growly, but he becomes the central hub of the pack. The comforter and caregiver but if you mess with his pack, you better back that bus up because he will come after you. There’s something really comforting about that to me.

What about an alpha always having to be in charge? That’s a pretty typical role for an alpha too, isn’t it? I think it’s the difference between an alpha *male* and an alpha of a pack. An alpha male is large and in charge, but an alpha in paranormal doesn’t have to be that way, does he?

If I weren’t the alpha, I’m pretty sure I’d be the beta. I don’t necessarily have to be the *one* in charge, but I’m pretty sure I’d be pretty near the top of the food chain. I might possibly be a bit too bossy for my own good. (At least I can admit it, right? That’s the first step?) Then again, that’s the way I think of a beta. They’re the second in command, but the buck doesn’t really stop with them. There’s one more person above them. I kind of like the idea of that. (Which took my mind right back to the gutter…someone above me? Really? I clearly haven’t had enough sleep! LOL)

What do you think? Do you want your alphas to be your safe place, or do you like ‘em big and growly? Or maybe you like a combination of both? What about you? Do you want to be the one in charge, or do you think you’d have another role in the pack? Let me know!

About Poppy Dennison

A sassy southern lady, Poppy Dennison developed an obsession with things that go bump in the night in her early years after a barn door flew off its hinges and nearly squashed her. Convinced it was a ghost trying to get her attention, she started looking for other strange and mysterious happenings around her. Not satisfied with what she found, Poppy has traveled to Greece, Malaysia and England to find inspiration for the burly bears and silver foxes that melt her butter. Her love of paranormal continues to flourish nearly thirty years later, and she writes steamy love stories about the very things that used to keep her up all night. If her childhood ghost is lucky, maybe one day she’ll give him his own happily ever after.
