Loving a demon isn’t the end of the world—losing him is.

Claire, the Devil’s assistant, knows very little about the world she was dropped into five years ago, when she inherited her mother’s unpaid debt to the Demon King. She certainly didn’t expect to be a contender for the Fallen Queen’s throne, a target for the Druid King’s mafia, or a suspect in the murder of Junior, the Devil’s oldest hell spawn.

In a last ditch effort to save her life and get out of her deal with the Devil, she sets out to solve Junior’s murder only to be taken prisoner by the four most dangerous immortal hell spawn alive.

Not to be out done, the Pagan Queen Mab, claims Claire for entering her realm uninvited. She has an old debt to settle with her brother the Devil. Taking Claire from him after losing her years ago is just icing on the cake.

Will Claire win her freedom, and save herself from the Devil? Or be trapped by Mab forever?

I had the pleasure of meeting HD (Heather) at Coastal Magic a few weeks back. We were introduced by none other than Carol Kunz/Amanda Jason! (She is a sweetheart BTW) Heather and I spent nearly an hour just talking about her new book (available today!) and of course I wanted to introduce you all to her and vice versa. So let’s all give a warm welcome to HD Smith!

Hi Heather and welcome to Little Read Riding Hood! Why don’t we start off with you introducing yourself.

Thanks Laura for having me on your site. I’ve been writing off and on for over ten years. I moved to Florida in 1997, after graduating from Clemson University. After a year in the real world, I went back to school at night to get a masters in computer science from Florida Institute of Technology. After reaching that goal, still not satisfied with the daily grind, I started writing 🙂 … I love my day job (working for an awesome cruise line in Celebration, FL), but having the ability to escape into my own world is a joy not easily described. Writing is a passion for me, and I hope others will enjoy the world I’ve created in Dark Hope.

How would you explain Dark Hope to someone who wants to know more than just the blurb?

Claire is the twenty-one year old administrative assistant to the Devil, whom she calls The Boss. There are three realms in my world: Paradise, Purgatory, and Hell (yes, I totally borrowed that from Dante). The Devil is the Demon King, the ruler of Hell. The other realms are ruled by Mab, the Pagan Queen (Purgatory), and Harry, the Druid King (Paradise). Claire will play a significant role in future events. I plan to write two other books in this series. Book one is mainly about Claire discovering her powers and learning about her real place in their world.
This is your debut novel correct? How do you plan to spend release day – celebrating or hiding under the covers?

This is my first traditionally published novel (I have self published two middle grade books through Smashwords), and I plan to celebrate … I have a Facebook event scheduled for March 3rd. I’ve taken the day off so I can be online at different points to promote the book and hold giveaways. This is my first attempt at hosting a Facebook event, so I’m crossing my fingers that I do it right 🙂

Which character would you want to be from your book?

We find out a lot about Claire in this book (I won’t spoil it), but if I had to choose I’d be Claire, however, Cinnamon is a total bad-ass so she’d be my second choice.
Rapid fire round:

Guilty pleasure? Cherry Coke <– yes, I know it’s not chocolate
Food? Cape Cod Sour Cream and Onion potato chips <– I’m not a foodie (obviously) Movie? Shawshank Redemption
Book or Author? Karen Marie Moning – Fever Series (I’m impatiently waiting for next Dani book!)

This or that:

Beer or wine? Tea
Dogs or cats? Cats
Sweets or salty? Salty

I just hopped over from the FB party and found this awesome new blog to follow. Thank you for the fun interview and I am looking forward to following your site.

I just added this to my wishlist too. You pretty much had me at Mab ruling Purgatory 😉 And maybe it’s just me, but any time I see a writer-of-fiction that has a science-y career, it makes me pay more attention. I love it when people are able to find that kind of balance.
