Coastal Magic Virtual Convention Featured Author Interview: Delilah S. Dawson

February 10, 2021 Convention 0

Coastal Magic is a casual reader weekend, *usually* right on “the world’s most famous beach”.  However, for 2021, we’re taking our bookish shenanigans to the interwebs!!

We’d love for you to join us for interesting discussion, fun “meet & greets”, and lots of ways to interact with fellow booklovers and storytellers — all from the comfort of your favorite reading spot!

Even though we won’t be together, we’re still planning to give everyone involved a weekend they’ll remember for years to come.

SOOOOOON! Soon we will be together (well, virtually together) to scream and exclaim and do all things nerdy about books! Today I have a TREAT – an interview with one of my most favorite humans, Delilah S. Dawson! And when she says she has something for everyone, whew, she is not joking.

Laura: Hi Delilah! Thanks for stopping by today. Can you please introduce yourself and tell us about your books?

Delilah: Hi! I’m Delilah S. Dawson, although I also write as Lila Bowen. If you shout LILA in a crowded room, I’m pretty much guaranteed to turn around. I write all over the place: Urban Fantasy (the Blud series), YA (Hit, Strike), Horror (Servants of the Storm and the upcoming middle grade horror, Mine), Star Wars (Phasma and Galaxy’s Edge: Black Spire), Weird Western Fantasy (the Shadow series, starting with Wake of Vultures), humorous Fantasy satire (the Tales of Pell, co-written with Kevin Hearne), plus comics, both creator-owned (Ladycastle, Sparrowhawk, Star Pig) and IP (Star Wars Adventures, Star Wars Forces of Destiny, Marvel Action: Spider-Man, Firefly, Adventure Time, Disney Descendants, Labyrinth, Rick and Morty, and, most recently, Wellington, written with Aaron Mahnke of the Lore Podcast). WHEW. Something for everyone! What can I say– I get bored easily.
L: You have quite the backlist! If someone was new to you and wanted to start reading your books, where would you suggest they start?
D:
If you like Star Wars – Phasma and then Black Spire
If you like Buffy or Lonesome Dove – Wake of Vultures and the Shadow series
If you like Terry Pratchett – Kill the Farm Boy and the Tales of Pell
If you like sexy vampires – Wicked as They Come and the Blud series
If you’re worried about the banks turning the kids of debtors into assassins – Hit and Strike
If you’re worried the hoarder’s house you just bought is haunted – Mine (out Fall 2021)
If you’ve experienced domestic abuse or sexual harassment and would like to punch out the teeth of oppressive dudes – The Violence (out 2022)
L: Ohh, I hadn’t heard much about those last two. *adds both to my TBR* Speaking of a TBR list, what book are you currently reading?
D: I’m working on a (secret project!) first draft, which means there’s only one thing in my reading queue: Contemporary Romance! When I’m holding a book in my head, I just can’t manage to remember the rules of anyone else’s magical world, so it’s all about the sweet love. I’m reading A Rogue By Any Other Name by Sarah Maclean and Frankly in Love by David Yoon.
L: Can you tell us any more about what you are working on?
D: It’s a secret, so I can’t say. 🙂 But I’m waiting on an edit letter for The Violence and have a magical contemporary YA retelling of The Tempest in my agent’s inbox.
L: OK, now time for some not book related questions! What is the best (or worst!) gift you’ve ever received?
D: For our 15th wedding anniversary, my wonderful husband gave me an 8-foot long taxidermied alligator named Terry. My son came running into our house back in Tampa, shouting, “Mom, there’s an alligator in the backyard!” And it’s me, so I grabbed my phone and went running outside barefoot to record it. There was indeed a gator in the yard, but he’s mine forever. It’s always fun to see people react to him when they first come in the house. I also recently got into mountain biking thanks to my friend Cathy, so I bought myself the birthday present of a decent beginner bike, a Trek Marlin 5. I’m having so much fun on the trails!
L: What did you want to be when you grew up?
D: I wanted to be an artist. And I am– but with words, not paint.
L: If you had a new roommate, what would be one “deal breaker” for you?
D: I can’t stand the smell of cigarette smoke, and I have a veeeeeeery sensitive nose. I also hate when the TV is on constantly, especially the news. So I guess if someone has no odor and is utterly silent, it might work.
L: What advice would you give 15-year-old you?
D: All this pain will be worthwhile some day when you kill everyone who’s wronged you in your books.
L: And last, but certainly not least (in my opinion anyway!) – If there was an adult version of ice cream trucks that drove around and sold things (doesn’t have to be ice cream), what one item would you hope they sold?
D: I want an ice cream truck that sells poke. I’d get a shrimp bowl with all the fixings and extra spicy mayo, a Dole Whip split bowl with chocolate chips, and whatever craft soda they carried. It would be very dangerous to have such a vehicle come to my house regularly.

I’ve met Delilah, both online and in person, a number of times, and each time I learn something new. She is a freaking DELIGHT and her books are absolutely fantastic. I want to tell you about all of them, but I picked the one coming out this fall to spotlight below. Of course, several are mentioned in the interview and I have linked to more information for each one, so check them out as well.

Don’t forget to go here to make sure you are all set up for the virtual events, and the event Facebook page to get the schedule updates and panel information. I am excited to “see” you all soon!

A twisty, terrifying ghost story about twelve-year-old Lily, her creepy new home in Florida, and the territorial ghost of the young girl who lived there before her.

Lily's new house is a real nightmare. . . .
Lily Horne is a drama queen. It's helped her rise to stardom in the school play, but it's also landed her in trouble. Her parents warn her that Florida has to be different. It's a fresh start. No theatrics. But this time, the drama is coming for her.
The Hornes' new house is awful. The pool is full of slime, the dock is rotten, and the swamp creeps closer every day. But worst of all, the house isn't empty . . . it's packed full of trash, memories, and, Lily begins to fear, the ghost of the girl who lived there before her.
And whatever is waiting in the shadows wants to come out to play.
