Closing her eyes, preparing for the inevitable splat of her death, she was startled when a strong hand reached out and she was yanked onto the back of Vortex.

“That was close, Princess!” Prince yelled as she tried to get her heart beating at a normal pace. She felt as if she’d lost it somewhere during the fall.

The flying monkeys were in hot pursuit, so Laura wrapped the cape around herself as Prince’s strong arms encircled her, and a feeling of being absolutely safe with him washed over her.

“Look!” Laura pointed to what looked like a small cave in one of the hills. “If we can somehow get to that cave, we should be able to hide for a while.”
It wasn’t the best plan, but it was all they had. She heard Prince grunt in agreement behind her and suddenly Vortex was off, flying and dipping and rolling and doing all sorts of maneuvers that were making Laura’s stomach spin. She shut her eyes, and then heard a surprisingly soft voice in her ear.

“I think we lost them.” With a thud, they landed at the entrance to the cave. It was too big for Vortex, but they scrambled off his back and ran for the safety of the darkness.

“Will he be okay?” Laura asked as he flew away.

“I am more worried about you.” He was much closer than she thought, and she nearly jumped when a hand stroked some hair away from her face.

“I have waited so long for… Never mind.” He moved away and she followed the sound of his footsteps. It was too dark in the cave to see anything, but all of a sudden, the cape began to glow, lighting up her face.

Laura used the light to search for him, and found him standing against one of the walls.

“What’s wrong?” This was a stupid question. Everything was wrong.

“Nothing,” he said, which meant there was something very wrong. Finally, he turned to her and gasped.

“You’re glowing.”

“Yeah, I know. It’s kind of a new thing. This cape is something else.” She laughed nervously and the next thing she knew, she was being kissed. Not just kissed. This was more like… two lips battling for kiss domination. She was startled at first, and then her arms went around Prince’s neck and she pressed herself against his armor and just as his hands were pulling the cape from her body…
