…a dragon!

Laura shrieked and staggered backwards.

“Easy there,” Prince said gently, placing his hand on her shoulder to steady her. “He’s on our side.”

Laura craned her neck back, taking in the full glory of the dragon. He was huge. Vibrant ruby scales covered every inch of rippling muscle, reflecting the golden rays of the sun. Spikes protruded from his eyebrows and forehead, tracing down his spine to fade into a sharp-pointed tail. The fine veins in the membrane of his wings were visible as he folded them at his sides, deadly talons digging craters into the earth at his feet. A leather saddle was strapped to his back, right between the shoulder blades.

The magnificent beast lowered its head, turning slightly so that one massive amber eye was directly at her own eye level. He blinked slowly, slitted reptilian pupil focusing on her. Laura took a step back, heart racing, still unsure. She shot a glance back at Prince for reassurance, but he merely gave a slight nod. The dragon made a huffing sound that sounded suspiciously like a chuckle.

“I will not harm you, tiny Princess,” he said in a deep rumbling voice. Laura could feel the vibration through the soles of her feet. “My name is Vortex, and I am here to take you to your Granny.”

“Take me to…You mean we have to fly?” She eyed him dubiously. There was that sound again – he was laughing at her! She braced her fists on her hips, grasping onto the flare of annoyance to drown out her fear. “Forgive me if I don’t go leaping onto your back, but I’ve never seen a dragon before.”

“Have you not? Well, all in good time. Granny will give you your memories back. But we must hurry! The Order will be looking for you.”

“The Order?”

“They have been the enemy of this kingdom since the beginning of time. I will explain more when we get to Granny’s. Now come!”

Prince placed his hand on the small of her back, guiding her forward. He climbed up into the saddle, then held his hand out to her. She hesitated for a moment, then with a shrug she placed her hand in his. “You only live once,” she muttered under her breath, clambering up in front of him.
