“…kill your enemies with gas.”
Laura blinked, certain she had heard him wrong. There was no way…but the expression on Prince’s face was deadly serious. “You’re telling me that out of all the witchy powers in the universe, I got stuck with deadly farts?! What kind of lame power is that?”
Prince gaped at her. “What? No, that’s not what I meant at all! How could you – never mind. You can also control the four elements. Earth, air, fire, water.”
Oh, thank goodness. She really did not want to be known as the Fatal Fart Queen. “Jeez, Prince,” she exclaimed, “lead with that next time!”
“I am sorry, Princess.”
Laura waved off his apology. “Enough with the royal title stuff. It’s weird, like you’re talking to someone else, not me. Just stick with Laura, okay?”
The corner of Prince’s mouth tipped up in a sexy half-smile. “As you wish.”
Great, now she was thinking of The Princess Bride, with him as her devoted Wesley – although she wouldn’t mind if he played Dread Pirate Roberts with her…

She took it automatically, their fingers twining together. “Granny’s house is not far. If we can make it through these woods without further mishap, we should be–” Prince stopped suddenly, his whole body tensing. “Do you feel that?”
Laura frowned. She had no idea what he was…wait. She did feel something. The ground was shivering beneath her feet, tiny tremors chasing up her legs.
“What is it?” she asked. This getting chased by bad guys stuff was getting old, real fast. She was sick of running, sick of feeling helpless. She had magic inside of her – somewhere – and she was ready to use it. But how? What was she supposed to do?
The ground shook harder. Something was coming alright, and whatever it was, it was big and moving fast. Laura could hear branches snapping and trees groaning as the unknown monster barreled toward them.
Prince released her hand and drew his sword. “Run,” he said in a commanding voice. “Run and don’t look back.”
“What about you?”
“I’ll buy you time.” He shot her a fierce look. “Go!”
But it was too late. The monster burst through the trees, charging straight for them. It looked like…
