He's arrogant, domineering, and... To. Die. For.Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.
Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something...unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.
Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life...or is it Hunter?
This book was hard for me to get excited about in some ways. I absolutely love the Lux series, so I was excited that this was another book by Jennifer Armentrout and it had to do with the Luxen. What I wasn’t excited about was that it was about Arum. Due to my love for all things Daemon Black, it was hard for me to be excited about a being that keeps trying to kill my honeybunches. Plus I’m really not normally into aliens. I’m actually quite terrified of the idea of aliens. The only thing that scares me as much as aliens is robots. And spiders. Eff a spider. I freaking HATE spiders.
In this book we are introduced to Hunter. He is an arum who works with the DOD. This book had a completely different feel to it than the Luxen books do, at least I think so. And its probably bc we are seeing things from “the enemy’s” point of view. The luxen in this book are dangerous douche canoes. Seriously. They are dangerous to humans. And not nearly as lovable as the Luxen we have come to know and love.
Hunter is given the task of watching over Selena. Selena’s bff, Mel, accidently saw her boyfriend go all lightbulb during an argument with his brother. Her boyfriend also happens to be the son of a senator! The DOD decides to put Selena into protection because they don’t know how much Mel told her that would be very dangerous for them if it was leaked to the press or anyone else. So essentially the DOD, and the Senator are both worried that Selena knows too much and are trying to decide what to do with her. In the meantime, she has to hang out with Hunter and try to ignore her growing feelings for him.
So up until this point, we have always seen Arum as being these mean and nasty aliens that’s sole purpose is to kill and eat our Luxen friends. It seems as though they attack completely out of greed and feeding necessity. Apparently not all Arum are like that. Some are dangerous to Luxen and humans, and like to play with their food!
It is really hard to have any sympathy for Hunter at first, but as time goes on, and he spends more time with Selena, we start to see a different side to him. Apparently it’s the first time he is seeing this side of himself too. The changes to his character that he goes through are not just an overnight thing, and JLA, does a good job of drawing it out so it doesn’t feel like and insta-love situation, which I for one appreciate the hell out of.
As usual, JLA has a way with words that cannot compare to anyone. Her writing style is unique and gives the reader so many different emotions, that each book is a roller coaster. I love the fact that every one of her books that I have read have a smart ass in them. I, being a smart ass myself, love snarky characters with a funky sense of humor like mine. It’s not often I can say the snarkiness levels are adequate, but with Obsession, its perfect. There is a serious situation, which is full of tension, but the characters have enough of a sense of humor to make things not so much of a downer.
I would recommend this book to everyone. Even if you don’t like aliens. Even if you are afraid of aliens like I am. I don’t think you need to have read the lux series to know or understand obsession, but you should totally read them anyway if you haven’t already.
