Expected publication: August 13th 2012 by Metal Blonde Books
The truth is out there…
The Dex-Files is a compilation novel that accompanies the Experiment in Terror Series and is not to be-read as a stand-alone. In the Dex-Files we find a variety of scenes and chapters from the enigmatic Dex Foray’s POV from books #1-6 in the series. Some of these scenes have been previously published, albeit from Perry’s POV, while other scenes are completely new.
In addition to it not being a stand-alone, the novel also contains some major spoilers and should be read only by those who have read all the published books in the series.
*Note* This review does contain what I consider to be minor spoilers if you have not read the previous books. If I kept this spoiler free I could not quote anything or discuss anything. EVERYTHING HAS MEANING.
If you have not read EVERYTHING (and I mean everything!) in this series up until this point, DO THAT FIRST. It is very important that this series be read in order. Even the in between books. Or maybe especially the in between books. So much back story is revealed, that would not make a bit of sense without context.
You know those books, where the hero is wonderfully perfect, inexplicably devoted to the heroine, drop dead gorgeous and sweet to a fault? Decclan “Dex” Foray is not that guy. We’ve always known that. The Dex Files (#5.7 in Experiment in Terror) gives us a sneak peek into his mind. And it is not a place for the faint of heart. Or the squeamish. Or easily offended.
And yet, I love him even more by the end of this book. It is great getting another perspective into our damaged little man. I mean really, anyone that can say,
“Sir Swagger Douchington the Fuck”
With a straight face, or at least think it, gets a mental high five from me. That has got to be a new all time favorite phrase. Another scene, that we all love and loathe, is in the basement of the asylum, when Dex asks Perry if she loves him.
“Do you love me?”
Please say yes.
Oh fuck, say yes Perry.
It is good to know he was thinking what we were all screaming at our e-reader. It is also easy to understand why I get a much fouler mouth when reading this book. Fuck is one of Dex’s favorite words. He says and thinks it a lot. And it just fits.
I devoured this book in close to one sitting. It was an easy read for me, in the fact that I already knew the set-up for each scene. I knew what was going on, and it was just a different point of view. Which means, again, it is very important to read this series, in order. To read my review of the series as a whole, click here. My review of Old Blood here.
And check back during the week of August 13-17 for an interview with our man Dex! He is stopping by for my birthday.
So, yeah, this is easy. 5 baskets from me. Now if only I could read the next book, Into the Hollow, NOW.
And thank you SO MUCH to Karina Halle for providing me with an ARC of this book.
